Works exhibited at School of Waters
Ridotto del Teatro Titano
The installation Lifesaver (2015) refers to the campaign "Oro alla patria" (Gold to the Fatherland) lunched by the Italian Fascist regime in the 1930ies after the League of Nations had imposed economic sanctions on Italy because of its open aggression towards Ethiopia. Gold wedding rings and other precious metal objects were collected from a large part of the population to bear the costs of war. With regard to the present time the work points out, among others, the violence of the European migration policy including the military operations in the Mediterranean under the guise of humanitarian interventions.
Lifesaver (golden concrete sculpture/embroidery/cord, 19th cent. military box, postcard 1935, various archival material) was realised in the frame of the long-term research “In the belly of fascism and colonialism” (2013 - ∞) during the art residency at Künstlerhaus Büchsenhausen (Innsbruck/2015). The original work is to be found at the Weltmuseum (Vienna).
